Master Class: Reading N3 Simple Narratives

Welcome to your JLPT N3 reading guide! At the N3 level, reading shifts from simple, factual sentences to narratives—stories that express time progression, character emotions, and subtle plot twists.

To master N3 narratives, you must learn to track chronological order and recognize clue-bearing grammar patterns.

1. Key Grammar in N3 Narratives

Narratives rely heavily on grammar that connects events in time or shows a sudden change in situation.

A. ~うちに (While... / Before...)

This pattern indicates doing an action while a certain state exists, or before that state changes.

  • Form: Verb (Dictionary/Te-form/Nai-form) + うちに | N + のうちに | i-Adj + うちに
  • Example:
    明るいうちに、森を抜け出さなければならない。
Translation: We must escape the forest while it is still light.

B. ~たところ (When... [I discovered that])

Used when you do something, and as a direct result, you discover or experience something new.

  • Form: Verb (Ta-form) + ところ
  • Example:
    窓を開けたところ、美しい小鳥が飛び込んできた。
Translation: When I opened the window, [to my surprise] a beautiful bird flew in.

2. Narrative Connectives (The Roadmaps)

Pay close attention to these conjunctions; they signal where the story is going:

ConjunctionReadingMeaningNarrative Function
するとSurutoThen; thereuponSignals an immediate, often unexpected consequence.
ところがTokorogaHowever; butIntroduces an obstacle or plot twist.
そこでSokodeSo; thereforeShows the character's active decision to solve a problem.

3. Practice Reading Passage

Read the following passage, paying attention to the underlined grammar and the flow of time.

ある秋の日のこと、私は一人で近くの山に登った。紅葉(もみじ)が美しいうちに写真を撮ろうと思ったのだ。

山頂(さんちょう)に着いたところ、急に濃い霧(きり)が立ち込めてきて、周りが何も見えなくなってしまった。私が不安に思っていると、どこからか静かな鈴(すず)の音が聞こえてきた。

そこで、私はその音を頼(たよ)りに歩いていくことにした。しばらく進むと、目の前に小さな古い寺が現れた。

Vocabulary Breakdown

  • 紅葉 (もみじ): Autumn leaves
  • 山頂 (さんちょう): Mountain summit
  • 霧が立ち込める (きりがたちこめる): Fog rolls in / mists over
  • 頼りにする (たよりにする): To rely on / follow as a guide

4. Reading Comprehension Challenge

質問 (Question):
筆者(ひっしゃ - the author)は、なぜ古い寺を見つけることができましたか。

  1. 地図を頼りにして歩いたから。
  2. 霧が晴れて、周りが見えるようになったから。
  3. 聞こえてきた鈴の音の方向へ進んだから。
  4. 寺の鐘の音が聞こえたから。

Explanatory Answer

Correct Answer: 3

  • Analysis: The text states: 「どこからか静かな鈴の音が聞こえてきた。そこで、私はその音を頼りに歩いていくことにした。」 (A quiet sound of a bell was heard from somewhere. Therefore, I decided to walk relying on that sound.)
  • Option 1 is incorrect because no map (地図) is mentioned.
  • Option 2 is incorrect because the fog did not clear.
  • Option 4 is a distractor; the text mentions a "bell" (鈴 - suzu, small bell), not a temple bell (鐘 - kane), and specifically notes following the sound.

Quick Study Tip for N3 Narratives

When reading, always ask yourself: "Who is doing what, and when?" Underline indicators of time (~うちに, ~たところ) and logical turns (すると, そこで) to map out the story's timeline in your head.
