ใ‚ˆใ‚Šใƒปใฉใกใ‚‰ใƒปใ„ใกใฐใ‚“ โ€” Making Comparisons

This lesson focuses on the three key comparison structures in Japanese: ใ‚ˆใ‚Š for comparing two items (AใฏBใ‚ˆใ‚Š...), ใฉใกใ‚‰ for asking which is more/better between two options, and ใ„ใกใฐใ‚“ for expressing the most/extreme among three or more. Practice forming and understanding comparative and superlative sentences with adjectives.

๐ŸŽฏ Goal: Compare two or more things using ใ‚ˆใ‚Š, ใฉใกใ‚‰, and ใ„ใกใฐใ‚“.

Lesson Content

Learning Goal

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to compare two or more things in Japanese using ใ‚ˆใ‚Š (yori), ใฉใกใ‚‰ (dochira), and ใ„ใกใฐใ‚“ (ichiban). These three words are the building blocks for making comparisons in everyday conversation.

Concept

In English, we say "A is more ___ than B" or "Which is more ___?" or "A is the most ___." In Japanese, the structure is different but simple:

  • ใ‚ˆใ‚Š (yori) = "than" (marks the thing being compared against)
  • ใฉใกใ‚‰ (dochira) = "which (one of two)" (used for questions)
  • ใ„ใกใฐใ‚“ (ichiban) = "most / number one" (marks the superlative)

Step-by-Step Breakdown

1. Using ใ‚ˆใ‚Š (yori) โ€” "than"

Pattern:
[A] ใฏ [B] ใ‚ˆใ‚Š [adjective] ใงใ™ใ€‚
โ†’ "A is more [adjective] than B."

  • ใ‚ˆใ‚Š always comes after the thing being compared against (B).
  • The adjective comes at the end.

Examples:

JapaneseRomajiEnglish
ๆ—ฅๆœฌใฏใ‚คใƒณใƒ‰ใ‚ˆใ‚Šๅฐใ•ใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚Nihon wa Indo yori chiisai desu.Japan is smaller than India.
ใ‚ณใƒผใƒ’ใƒผใฏ็ด…่Œถใ‚ˆใ‚Š้ซ˜ใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚Koohii wa koocha yori takai desu.Coffee is more expensive than tea.
ไปŠๆ—ฅใฏๆ˜จๆ—ฅใ‚ˆใ‚Šๆš‘ใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚Kyou wa kinou yori atsui desu.Today is hotter than yesterday.

Note: The adjective can be ใ„-adjective (e.g., ๅฐใ•ใ„, ้ซ˜ใ„, ๆš‘ใ„) or ใช-adjective (e.g., ้™ใ‹ใ  โ†’ ้™ใ‹ใงใ™). For ใช-adjectives, just add ใงใ™.

2. Using ใฉใกใ‚‰ (dochira) โ€” "which (of two)"

Pattern:
[A] ใจ [B] ใจใ€ใฉใกใ‚‰ใŒ [adjective] ใงใ™ใ‹ใ€‚
โ†’ "Between A and B, which is more [adjective]?"

  • ใฉใกใ‚‰ is only used when comparing two items.
  • The answer uses ใฎใปใ†ใŒ (no hou ga) = "the one that is more..."

Examples:

JapaneseRomajiEnglish
็Šฌใจ็Œซใจใ€ใฉใกใ‚‰ใŒๅฅฝใใงใ™ใ‹ใ€‚Inu to neko to, dochira ga suki desu ka.Between dogs and cats, which do you like more?

Answer pattern:
[A] ใฎใปใ†ใŒ [adjective] ใงใ™ใ€‚
โ†’ "A is more [adjective]."

Example: ็Šฌใฎใปใ†ใŒๅฅฝใใงใ™ใ€‚(Inu no hou ga suki desu. โ€” I like dogs more.)

3. Using ใ„ใกใฐใ‚“ (ichiban) โ€” "the most / number one"

Pattern:
[Group] ใงใ€[A] ใŒ ใ„ใกใฐใ‚“ [adjective] ใงใ™ใ€‚
โ†’ "Among [group], A is the most [adjective]."

  • ใ„ใกใฐใ‚“ means "most" or "number one."
  • Use ใง to mark the group (e.g., ใ‚ฏใƒฉใ‚นใง = in the class, ๆ—ฅๆœฌใง = in Japan).

Examples:

Common Mistake

โŒ Wrong: ๆ—ฅๆœฌใฏใ‚คใƒณใƒ‰ใ‚ˆใ‚Šๅฐใ•ใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚ (This is actually correct โ€” but learners often put ใ‚ˆใ‚Š in the wrong place.)

โŒ Wrong: ใฉใกใ‚‰ใŒๅฅฝใใงใ™ใ‹ใ€‚ (This is fine if context is clear, but beginners often forget the A ใจ B ใจ part.)

Quick Practice

Fill in the blanks with ใ‚ˆใ‚Š, ใฉใกใ‚‰, or ใ„ใกใฐใ‚“.

Try making your own sentences:

  • Compare two cities you know using ใ‚ˆใ‚Š.
  • Ask a friend a ใฉใกใ‚‰ question about food.
  • Say what your favorite season is using ใ„ใกใฐใ‚“.

Summary and Next Step
