Learning Goal
Read and understand a short narrative passage in Japanese, then answer simple comprehension questions. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify key information (who, what, where, when) from a beginner-level story.
Concept
A narrative passage tells a story. In Japanese, even simple stories use basic sentence patterns (AใฏBใงใ / AใBใพใ / AใซBใพใ) and common time words (ใใฎใ kinou = yesterday, ใใใ ashita = tomorrow). To understand a passage, you need to:
- Find the subject (who)
- Find the action (what they do)
- Find the time/place (when/where)
Step-by-Step Breakdown
1. Key Vocabulary for Narratives
| Japanese | Romaji | English |
|---|---|---|
| ใใฎใ | kinou | yesterday |
| ใใใ | ashita | tomorrow |
| ใใใพใใ | ikimashita | went (past) |
| ใในใพใใ | tabemashita | ate (past) |
| ใฟใพใใ | mimashita | saw/watched (past) |
| ใจใใ ใก | tomodachi | friend |
| ใใฃใใใซ | issho ni | together |
| ใใใใ | sorekara | after that / then |
2. Basic Narrative Sentence Structure
A typical short narrative follows this order:
[Time] + [Subject] + [Place] + [Action]
Example:
- ใใฎใใใใใใฏใใใใใซใใใพใใใ
- Kinou, watashi wa kouen ni ikimashita.
- "Yesterday, I went to the park."
3. Past Tense Verbs (ใพใ โ ใพใใ)
For narrative passages, verbs are usually in past tense:
- ใในใพใ (tabemasu) โ ใในใพใใ (tabemashita) = ate
- ใใใพใ (ikimasu) โ ใใใพใใ (ikimashita) = went
- ใฟใพใ (mimasu) โ ใฟใพใใ (mimashita) = saw/watched
- ใใฟใพใ (yomimasu) โ ใใฟใพใใ (yomimashita) = read
4. Connecting Events
Use these words to link actions in order:
- ใใใใ (sorekara) = after that / then
- ใใใฆ (soshite) = and then
- ใงใ (demo) = but

Common Mistake
Mistake: Mixing up ใง (de) and ใซ (ni) for places.
- ใง marks where an action happens (at/in).
- ใซ marks a destination (to/toward).
Correct:
- ใฌในใใฉใณใงใในใพใใ (Resutoran de tabemashita) = "Ate at a restaurant"
- ใใใใใซใใใพใใ (Kouen ni ikimashita) = "Went to the park"
Wrong: โ ใฌในใใฉใณใซใในใพใใ (Resutoran ni tabemashita) = "Ate to the restaurant" (incorrect)

- ใ ใ๏ผ (Who?)
- ใใค๏ผ (When?)
- ใฉใใง๏ผ (Where?)
