Advanced Adult Life Vocabulary
Build formal and professional vocabulary for N2: abstract nouns (方針, 傾向), compound verbs (取り組む, 見直す), and formal adverbs (一般的に, 主に).
🎯 Goal: Learn advanced N2 vocabulary used in daily adult professional and social life.

Introduction
Welcome to the Advanced N2 Vocabulary module, designed for upper-intermediate learners aiming to bridge the gap between daily conversation and professional-level Japanese. At the JLPT N2 level, vocabulary shifts from general communication to nuanced, formal, and abstract concepts often found in Japanese media, business settings, and academic texts. This lesson focuses on high-frequency N2 verbs, compound words, and idiomatic expressions. By mastering these terms, you will not only prepare effectively for the N2 exam but also enhance your ability to express complex thoughts with precision and natural fluency in real-world Japanese environments.
Lesson Content
Learning Goal
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to recognize and use 20 advanced N2 vocabulary items and 3 key grammar patterns commonly found in professional and social settings. You will understand how to describe turning points, formal events, cautious behavior, and abstract limits in Japanese.
Concept
At the N2 level, Japanese vocabulary moves beyond concrete daily objects (like hon "book" or taberu "eat") to abstract, formal, and nuanced terms. Many of these words share the kanji 開 (kai, "open"), which appears in contexts like opening a shop, an event, or a package. Others deal with limits (限), prevention (防), and human relations (摩擦, 妥協, 関わり合う). Mastering these will help you read news articles, understand business meetings, and express yourself more precisely.
Step-by-Step Breakdown
Part 1: Vocabulary – The "開" (kai) Family
These words all use the kanji 開 (open), but each has a specific meaning.
| Word | Reading | Meaning | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|---|
| 開催 | kaisai | holding (an event) | 来月、東京でオリンピックが開催される。 Raigetsu, Toukyou de orinpikku ga kaisai sareru. (Next month, the Olympics will be held in Tokyo.) |
| 開封 | kaifuu | opening (a letter/package) | この手紙はまだ開封されていない。 Kono tegami wa mada kaifuu sarete inai. (This letter has not been opened yet.) |
| 開幕 | kaimaku | raising the curtain; start of an event | サッカーシーズンが開幕した。 Sakkaa shiizun ga kaimaku shita. (The soccer season has started.) |
| 開店 | kaiten | opening a shop (for the day or new) | 新しいカフェが来週開店する。 Atarashii kafe ga raishuu kaiten suru. (A new café will open next week.) |
| 開設 | kaisetsu | establishment; setting up | 新しいウェブサイトを開設しました。 Atarashii webusaito o kaisetsu shimashita. (I set up a new website.) |
| 開発 | kaihatsu | development; exploitation | この地域の開発が進んでいる。 Kono chiiki no kaihatsu ga susunde iru. (Development of this area is progressing.) |
Memory tip: Think of 開 as "opening" something. 開催 = open + hold (an event), 開封 = open + seal (a letter), 開幕 = open + curtain (a show).

Part 4: Grammar Patterns
Pattern 1: 〜を契機に(して) — "Taking X as a turning point"
- Meaning: "Triggered by X," "using X as an opportunity"
- Structure: [Noun] + を契機に(して)
- Example:
- 結婚を契機に、料理を始めた。 Kekkon o keiki ni, ryouri o hajimeta. (Taking marriage as an opportunity, I started cooking.)
- 地震を契機に、防災意識が高まった。 Jishin o keiki ni, bousai ishiki ga takamatta. (The earthquake triggered a rise in disaster prevention awareness.)
Pattern 2: 〜からいうと / 〜から言えば — "From the standpoint of X"
- Meaning: "From X's perspective," "speaking in terms of X"
- Structure: [Noun] + からいうと / から言えば
- Example:
- 品質からいうと、この製品が一番だ。 Hinshitsu kara iu to, kono seihin ga ichiban da. (From a quality standpoint, this product is the best.)
- コストから言えば、もっと安い方法がある。 Kosuto kara ieba, motto yasui houhou ga aru. (Speaking in terms of cost, there is a cheaper method.)
Pattern 3: 〜に相違ない — "Must be; no doubt that"
- Meaning: Expresses strong certainty (formal, written)
- Structure: [Plain sentence] + に相違ない
- Example:
- 彼は犯人に相違ない。 Kare wa hannin ni soui nai. (He must be the culprit.)
- この計画は成功するに相違ない。 Kono keikaku wa seikou suru ni soui nai. (This plan will surely succeed.)
Mini Examples
- 転職を契機に、新しいスキルを身につけた。 Tenshoku o keiki ni, atarashii sukiru o mi ni tsuketa. (Taking the job change as an opportunity, I acquired new skills.)
- 経験から言えば、慎重に進めたほうがいい。 Keiken kara ieba, shinchou ni susumeta hou ga ii. (Speaking from experience, it's better to proceed cautiously.)
- 彼の態度は間違いなく失礼に相違ない。 Kare no taido wa machigainaku shitsurei ni soui nai. (His attitude must surely be rude.)
- 開店間際に客が来た。 Kaiten magiwa ni kyaku ga kita. (A customer came just before the shop opened.)
- 限りない可能性を信じている。 Kagirinai kanousei o shinjite iru. (I believe in endless possibilities.)
Common Mistake
Mistake: Confusing 間近 (majika) and 間際 (magiwa).
- 間近 means "close in distance or time" (e.g., 駅は間近だ eki wa majika da "the station is near").
- 間際 means "the very moment just before doing something" (e.g., 出発間際 shuppatsu magiwa "just before departure").
- Tip: 間際 always involves an action (the point of doing), while 間近 is about proximity.
Mistake: Using 限り (kagiri) incorrectly in "as long as" vs. "limit."
- 限り can mean both. In 私の知る限り (as far as I know), it's "as long as." In 時間の限り (time limit), it's "limit." Context determines meaning.
