Potential Form โ Can Do
This lesson covers the conjugation of verbs into the potential form for both ichidan and godan verbs, with attention to the ใใ ending for godan verbs. You'll practice using ใใใ for ichidan and ใใ for godan to say 'can do' or 'be able to,' and explore common usage patterns and exceptions.
๐ฏ Goal: Form and use the potential form (ใใใ/ใใ) to express ability.

Learning Goal
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to form and use the potential form in Japanese to say what you can or cannot do. You'll learn the rules for both ru-verbs and u-verbs, plus the special verb ใงใใ (dekiru).
Concept
The potential form changes a verb from "do" to "can do."
For example:
- ้ฃในใ (taberu) = to eat โ ้ฃในใใใ (taberareru) = can eat
- ๆธใ (kaku) = to write โ ๆธใใ (kakeru) = can write
In English, we add "can" before the verb. In Japanese, we change the verb ending.
Step-by-Step Breakdown
1. Ru-verbs (ichidan verbs)
Rule: Remove the final ใ (ru) and add ใใใ (rareru).
| Dictionary Form | Remove ใ | Add ใใใ | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| ่ฆใ (miru) | ่ฆ | ่ฆใใใ (mirareru) | can see |
| ่ตทใใ (okiru) | ่ตทใ | ่ตทใใใใ (okirareru) | can get up |
| ๆใใ (oshieru) | ๆใ | ๆใใใใ (oshierareru) | can teach |
Note: In casual speech, many people shorten ใใใ to ใใ (reru) for ru-verbs.
Example: ่ฆใใ (mireru) instead of ่ฆใใใ (mirareru). This is common but less formal.
2. U-verbs (godan verbs)
Rule: Change the final u sound to the e sound, then add ใ (ru).
| Dictionary Form | Change to e-sound | Add ใ | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| ๆธใ (kaku) | ใใ (kake) | ๆธใใ (kakeru) | can write |
| ่ฉฑใ (hanasu) | ใฏใชใ (hanase) | ่ฉฑใใ (hanaseru) | can speak |
| ๆณณใ (oyogu) | ใใใ (oyoge) | ๆณณใใ (oyogeru) | can swim |
| ๅพ ใค (matsu) | ใพใฆ (mate) | ๅพ ใฆใ (materu) | can wait |
| ๆญปใฌ (shinu) | ใใญ (shine) | ๆญปใญใ (shineru) | can die |
| ้ฃใถ (tobu) | ใจใน (tobe) | ้ฃในใ (toberu) | can fly |
| ่ชญใ (yomu) | ใใ (yome) | ่ชญใใ (yomeru) | can read |
| ไฝใ (tsukuru) | ใคใใ (tsukure) | ไฝใใ (tsukureru) | can make |
| ่ฒทใ (kau) | ใใ (kae) | ่ฒทใใ (kaeru) | can buy |
3. Irregular verbs
Only two verbs are irregular:
| Dictionary Form | Potential Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ใใ (suru) | ใงใใ (dekiru) | can do |
| ๆฅใ (kuru) | ๆฅใใใ (korareru) | can come |
Note: ใงใใ (dekiru) is also a standalone verb meaning "can do" or "is possible."
Mini Examples
Ru-verb example:
- ๆฅๆฌ่ชใ่ฉฑใใพใใ๏ผ
Nihongo ga hanasemasu ka?
Can you speak Japanese?
U-verb example:
- ๆผขๅญใ่ชญใใพใใ
Kanji ga yomemasu.
I can read kanji.
Irregular verb example:
- ใใขใใใงใใพใใ
Piano ga dekimasu.
I can play piano.
Negative example:
- ๆฉ่ตทใใงใใพใใใ
Hayaoki dekimasen.
I can't wake up early.
Common Mistake
โ Wrong: ้ฃในใใ (tabereru) in formal writing
โ
Correct: ้ฃในใใใ (taberareru) in formal writing
Many learners use the shorter ใใ form in casual speech, but for JLPT N4 and formal situations, stick with ใใใ for ru-verbs.
Also, remember that the particle changes!
- Normal verb: ๆฅๆฌ่ชใ่ฉฑใ (Nihongo o hanasu) = speak Japanese
- Potential verb: ๆฅๆฌ่ชใ่ฉฑใใ (Nihongo ga hanaseru) = can speak Japanese
The object takes ใ (ga) instead of ใ (o) in potential sentences.

Summary and Next Step
You now know how to form the potential verb in Japanese:
- Ru-verbs: Drop ใ โ add ใใใ (or casual ใใ)
- U-verbs: Change final u to e โ add ใ
- Irregular: ใใ โ ใงใใ, ๆฅใ โ ๆฅใใใ
- Particle change: ใ โ ใ
Next step: Practice using the potential form in real sentences. Try describing 3 things you can do and 3 things you cannot do in Japanese. Then move on to the volitional form (let's do ~) to keep building your verb skills!
