Lesson Content

Learning Goal

By the end of this lesson, you will confidently recognize and use 20 key N4 vocabulary words and their kanji, understand common readings, and avoid typical mistakes when using them in sentences.

Concept

N4 vocabulary builds on N5 basics by introducing more abstract words, compound verbs, and kanji with multiple readings. Many N4 words combine kanji you already know in new ways (e.g., ้ฃŸ (eat) + ไบ‹ (thing) = ้ฃŸไบ‹ (meal)). The key is learning which reading to use in which context.

Step-by-Step Breakdown

1. Common N4 Kanji and Their Readings

KanjiCommon ReadingsMeaning
้ฃŸใŸ (ในใ‚‹), ใ—ใ‚‡ใeat, food
ไบ‹ใ“ใจ, ใ˜thing, matter
้›ปใงใ‚“electricity
่ปŠใใ‚‹ใพ, ใ—ใ‚ƒcar, vehicle
ไผšใ‚ (ใ†), ใ‹ใ„meet, meeting

2. Key N4 Vocabulary Words

Group A: Daily Life

  • ้ฃŸไบ‹ (ใ—ใ‚‡ใใ˜) โ€“ meal
  • ้›ป่ฉฑ (ใงใ‚“ใ‚) โ€“ telephone
  • ไผš็คพ (ใ‹ใ„ใ—ใ‚ƒ) โ€“ company
  • ไป•ไบ‹ (ใ—ใ”ใจ) โ€“ work
  • ๆ™‚้–“ (ใ˜ใ‹ใ‚“) โ€“ time

Group B: Actions

  • ๅง‹ใ‚ใ‚‹ (ใฏใ˜ใ‚ใ‚‹) โ€“ to begin (something)
  • ็ต‚ใ‚ใ‚‹ (ใŠใ‚ใ‚‹) โ€“ to end
  • ่€ƒใˆใ‚‹ (ใ‹ใ‚“ใŒใˆใ‚‹) โ€“ to think
  • ๅฟ˜ใ‚Œใ‚‹ (ใ‚ใ™ใ‚Œใ‚‹) โ€“ to forget
  • ่ฆšใˆใ‚‹ (ใŠใผใˆใ‚‹) โ€“ to remember

Group C: Adjectives

  • ๅคงใใ„ (ใŠใŠใใ„) โ€“ big
  • ๅฐใ•ใ„ (ใกใ„ใ•ใ„) โ€“ small
  • ๆ–ฐใ—ใ„ (ใ‚ใŸใ‚‰ใ—ใ„) โ€“ new
  • ๅคใ„ (ใตใ‚‹ใ„) โ€“ old
  • ่‰ฏใ„ (ใ‚ˆใ„/ใ„ใ„) โ€“ good

3. Kanji Compounds (Two-kanji words)

When two N4 kanji combine, the reading is usually on'yomi (Chinese reading):

But some use kun'yomi (Japanese reading):

  • ไป•ไบ‹ (ใ—ใ”ใจ) = ไป• (ใ—) + ไบ‹ (ใ“ใจ) โ€“ irregular but common
  • ๆ™‚้–“ (ใ˜ใ‹ใ‚“) = ๆ™‚ (ใ˜) + ้–“ (ใ‹ใ‚“) โ€“ both on'yomi

Mini Examples

  1. ๆฏŽๆ—ฅใ€้ฃŸไบ‹ใ‚’ใ—ใพใ™ใ€‚
    Mainichi, shokuji o shimasu.
"I have a meal every day."

  2. ไป•ไบ‹ใŒ็ต‚ใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ—ใŸใ€‚
    Shigoto ga owarimashita.
    "Work ended."

  3. ๆ–ฐใ—ใ„้›ป่ฉฑใ‚’่ฒทใ„ใพใ—ใŸใ€‚
    Atarashii denwa o kaimashita.
    "I bought a new phone."

  4. ๆผขๅญ—ใ‚’่ฆšใˆใ‚‹ใฎใฏ้›ฃใ—ใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚
Kanji o oboeru no wa muzukashii desu.
    "Remembering kanji is difficult."

Common Mistake

Mixing up ๅคงใใ„ (ใŠใŠใใ„) and ๅคšใ„ (ใŠใŠใ„)

  • ๅคงใใ„ = big (size)
  • ๅคšใ„ = many (quantity)

โŒ ไบบใŒๅคงใใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚(Hito ga ookii desu.) โ€“ "The person is big." (sounds like they are physically large)
โœ… ไบบใŒๅคšใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚(Hito ga ooi desu.) โ€“ "There are many people."

Tip: ๅคงใใ„ describes size; ๅคšใ„ describes number. They look similar but are different words.

Quick Practice

Fill in the blanks with the correct word from the list:
(้ฃŸไบ‹, ไป•ไบ‹, ้›ป่ฉฑ, ๆ–ฐใ—ใ„, ่ฆšใˆใ‚‹)

  1. ๆฏŽๆœใ€___ใ‚’้ฃŸในใพใ™ใ€‚
    Every morning, I eat a ___.

  2. ๅ‹้”ใซ___ใ‚’ใ‹ใ‘ใพใ—ใŸใ€‚
I called my friend on the ___.

  3. ___้ดใ‚’่ฒทใ„ใพใ—ใŸใ€‚
    I bought ___ shoes.

  4. ๆผขๅญ—ใ‚’___ใฎใŒๅฅฝใใงใ™ใ€‚
    I like ___ kanji.

  5. ใŒๅฟ™ใ—ใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚
    *
    is busy.*

Answers:

  1. ้ฃŸไบ‹ (ใ—ใ‚‡ใใ˜)
  2. ้›ป่ฉฑ (ใงใ‚“ใ‚)
  3. ๆ–ฐใ—ใ„ (ใ‚ใŸใ‚‰ใ—ใ„)
  4. ่ฆšใˆใ‚‹ (ใŠใผใˆใ‚‹)
  5. ไป•ไบ‹ (ใ—ใ”ใจ)

Summary and Next Step

You've reviewed 15 essential N4 vocabulary words and their kanji. Remember:

  • On'yomi readings for two-kanji compounds (้ฃŸไบ‹, ้›ป่ฉฑ)
  • Kun'yomi for single-kanji verbs (่ฆšใˆใ‚‹, ๅฟ˜ใ‚Œใ‚‹)
  • Watch out for similar-looking words (ๅคงใใ„ vs ๅคšใ„)

Next step: Practice these words in sentences by writing 3 sentences of your own using vocabulary from Groups A, B, and C. Then move on to N4 grammar patterns like ใ€œใŸใ‚Šใ€œใŸใ‚Šใ™ใ‚‹ (doing things like...) and ใ€œใชใ‘ใ‚Œใฐใชใ‚‰ใชใ„ (must do).
