N4 Reading and Listening Review

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to read and understand short N4-level passages and identify key information in spoken Japanese. You will practice combining vocabulary, grammar, and kanji you have learned across all N4 modules.

N4 reading and listening tasks often test your ability to:

• Understand the main idea and details in a text or conversation
• Follow chronological order or cause-and-effect relationships
• Recognize common N4 grammar patterns (e.g., 〜たり〜たりする, 〜なければならない, 〜たほうがいい)
• Identify speaker intent (e.g., invitation, request, suggestion)

The key is to listen for key words (question words, time expressions, verbs) and read for sentence connectors (だから, しかし, それで).

Step 1: Preview the Text or Audio Topic

Before reading or listening, look at the title or any images. Ask yourself:

• What is this about? (e.g., daily routine, travel, health)
• What vocabulary do I already know for this topic?

Step 2: Identify the Main Question

N4 tasks often ask:

• 何について話していますか。(What is this about?)何話
• 正しいものはどれですか。(Which one is correct?)正
• この人は何をしなければなりませんか。(What must this person do?)人何

Read the question first. This tells you what to focus on.

Step 3: Scan for Key Information

• For reading: Look for time words (きのう, あした, まいあさ), verbs in 〜ている form, and 〜たい form.
• For listening: Listen for numbers, names, and repeated words.

Step 4: Check for Negatives and Contrasts

Common traps:

• 〜ない (not)
• 〜なかった (did not)
• しかし (but), でも (however)
• 〜が (but)

A sentence like "行きたかったですが、時間がありませんでした" means "I wanted to go, but I didn't have time." The key is the contrast.行時間

Example 1 (Reading)
Text: きのう、友だちと映画を見に行きました。映画はとてもおもしろかったです。でも、時間が長すぎて、ちょっと疲れました。
Question: この人は映画についてどう思っていますか。(What does this person think about the movie?)友映画見行時

• Key info: おもしろかった (interesting) + でも (but) + 疲れた (tired)疲
• Answer: おもしろかったけれど、疲れた。(It was interesting, but tiring.)疲

Example 2 (Listening)
Audio: あしたはテストがありますから、今夜は勉強しなければなりません。でも、友だちから電話が来たら、ちょっと話すかもしれません。
Question: この人は今夜何をしますか。(What will this person do tonight?)今夜勉強友電

• Key info: 勉強しなければならない (must study) + でも (but) + 電話が来たら (if a call comes)勉強電話来
• Answer: 勉強しますが、友だちの電話に出るかもしれません。(He will study, but might answer a friend's call.)勉強友電話出

Mistake: Focusing only on the first sentence and ignoring the second.

• Example: "映画はとてもおもしろかったです。でも、時間が長すぎて、ちょっと疲れました。" → Some learners only remember "おもしろかった" and miss the "疲れた" part.映画時間長疲
• Fix: Always read/listen to the whole sentence or whole short passage. Pay special attention to でも, しかし, そして, それで.

Read the passage and answer the question.

まいにち、学校が終わってから、図書館で勉強します。でも、きのうは頭が痛かったので、早く家に帰りました。家で少し休んでから、宿題をしました。学校終図書館

Question: きのう、この人は何をしましたか。(What did this person do yesterday?)人何

Imagine you hear this short conversation:

A: 週末、海に行かない？

B: 土曜日は大丈夫だよ。週末海行日曜

Question: 二人はいつ海に行きますか。(When will the two go to the beach?)二人海行
