Reading Technical and Specialized Texts
Practice decoding vocabulary, grammar, and structure typical of technical manuals, academic abstracts, or specialized articles. Focus on extracting key information and handling unfamiliar terms through context and kanji knowledge.
🎯 Goal: Read and understand technical or specialized short texts.
Lesson Content
Learning Goal
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to read and understand short technical or specialized Japanese texts (e.g., product manuals, simple news articles on science/tech, or instructions). You will learn key vocabulary, common sentence patterns, and strategies for breaking down dense information.
Concept
Technical and specialized texts in Japanese often use:
- Kanji-heavy vocabulary (often with specific, narrow meanings)
- Passive and causative-passive forms (e.g., される, させられる)
- Nominalized verbs (verb + こと / の)
- Set phrases (e.g., ~によって, ~に対して, ~における)
- Katakana loanwords (especially in tech/IT fields)
The key is not to translate every word, but to identify the main subject, action, and result or condition.
Step-by-Step Breakdown
1. Identify the Subject and Topic Marker
In technical texts, the topic is often marked by は or とは, and the subject by が.
- とは is used to define or explain a term.
- Example:
データベースとは、情報を整理して保存する仕組みです。
Deetabeesu to wa, jouhou o seiri shite hozon suru shikumi desu.
"A database is a system that organizes and stores information."
2. Look for Passive and Causative-Passive Forms
These are common in manuals and descriptions of processes.
- ~される (passive): "is done"
- ~させられる (causative-passive): "is made to do" (less common in tech, but appears)
- Example:
このボタンを押すと、画面が切り替えられます。
Kono botan o osu to, gamen ga kirikaeraremasu.
"When you press this button, the screen is switched."
3. Recognize Nominalized Verbs
Verbs are often turned into nouns using こと or の to describe functions or purposes.
- Example:
このソフトウェアの目的は、データを分析することです。
Kono sofutowea no mokuteki wa, deeta o bunseki suru koto desu.
"The purpose of this software is to analyze data."
4. Learn Common Technical Set Phrases
These appear frequently and can be learned as chunks.
| Japanese | Romaji | English |
|---|---|---|
| ~によって | ~ni yotte | by means of / depending on |
| ~に対して | ~ni taishite | toward / in contrast to |
| ~における | ~ni okeru | in / at (a context) |
| ~に基づいて | ~ni motozuite | based on |
| ~を通じて | ~o tsuujite | through / via |
5. Handle Katakana Loanwords
Many tech terms are English-based katakana. Sound them out and guess the English.
- インターフェース (intāfēsu) = interface
- アルゴリズム (arugorizumu) = algorithm
- アップデート (appudēto) = update
Mini Examples
Example 1 (Product Manual)
本製品は、USBケーブルを通じてパソコンに接続されます。
Hon seihin wa, USB kēburu o tsuujite pasokon ni setsuzoku saremasu.
"This product is connected to a computer via a USB cable."
Example 2 (Tech News)
新しいアルゴリズムによって、検索速度が向上しました。
Atarashii arugorizumu ni yotte, kensaku sokudo ga koujou shimashita.
"Search speed improved due to the new algorithm."
Example 3 (Definition)
クラウドとは、インターネットを通じてデータを保存・管理する仕組みです。
Kuraudo to wa, intaanetto o tsuujite deeta o hozon・kanri suru shikumi desu.
"The cloud is a system for storing and managing data via the internet."
Common Mistake
Mistake: Trying to translate every kanji literally, leading to confusion.
Fix: Focus on the grammar pattern and key nouns/verbs. For example, in:
この設定は、ユーザーによって変更できます。
Kono settei wa, yūzā ni yotte henkou dekimasu.
"This setting can be changed by the user."
If you get stuck on によって, remember it means "by" or "depending on." The core meaning is "setting can be changed by user."
Quick Practice
Drill 1: Fill in the blank with the correct phrase (choose from: によって, に対して, における)
このシステムは、新しい技術______開発されました。
Kono shisutemu wa, atarashii gijutsu ______ kaihatsu saremashita.
"This system was developed by means of new technology."
Drill 2: Translate the following sentence into English (focus on the passive form):
データは、サーバーに自動的に保存されます。
Deeta wa, sābā ni jidouteki ni hozon saremasu.
(Answers: 1. によって, 2. "Data is automatically saved to the server.")
Summary and Next Step
You have learned:
- How to identify subjects and topics in technical texts
- Common passive forms and set phrases
- How to handle katakana loanwords and nominalized verbs
Next Step: Practice reading a short Japanese tech article (e.g., from NHK News Web Easy's science section) and underline all instances of によって, に対して, and passive forms. Then try rewriting one sentence using a different grammar pattern (e.g., change passive to active).
