Lesson Content

Master Class: Reading N4 Short Articles (短文読解)

At the JLPT N4 level, Short Articles (短文 - tanbun) are brief, highly structured texts of 100 to 200 characters. These typically take the form of everyday announcements, emails, blog posts, or simple opinion pieces.

To ace these on the exam, you must move beyond translating word-for-word and learn to scan for structural signposts. This guide will teach you the core strategies to dissect and master N4 short articles.

1. Core Reading Strategies

When tackling an N4 short article, do not read blindly. Search for these three elements:

A. The Pivot Words (接続詞 - Conjunctions)

Authors use transitions to shift the direction of the text. Look out for:

  • しかし (shikashi) / でも (demo): However / But (Signals that the most important information or counter-argument is coming next).
  • だから (dakara) / ですから (desu kara): Therefore (Signals a conclusion or result).
  • たとえば (tatoeba): For example (Signals supporting details; you can skim this if you already understand the main point).

B. The Action Request (文末表現 - Sentence Endings)

In notices and emails, the core question usually asks what someone must or should do. Scan the sentence endings for:

  • 〜てください (~te kudasai): Please do...
  • 〜なければなりません (~nakereba narimasu): Must do...
  • 〜ないでください (~naide kudasai): Please do not...
  • 〜ほうがいいです (~hou ga ii desu): It is better to...

2. Guided Practice: The Library Notice

Let’s analyze a typical N4-level notice. Read the text below, paying attention to the highlighted grammar points.

【本文】図書館からのお知らせ (Notice from the Library)

来週の月曜日(10月15日)は、図書館のシステムを新しくするため、休みになります。

本を返したい人は、図書館の入り口にある「返却ボックス」に入れてください。ただし、CDやDVDは壊れやすいので、ボックスに入れないでください。次の開館日(火曜日)に直接窓口に返してください。

Vocabulary & Grammar Breakdown

  • 〜するため (~suru tame): Because of / In order to. Here, it indicates the reason for the closure (updating the system).
  • ただし (tadashi): However / Provided that. This is a critical N4 conjunction used to introduce exceptions or conditions.
  • 〜やすい (~yasui): Easy to [verb]. Combined with 壊れる (kowareru - to break), 壊れやすい means "fragile" or "easy to break."

3. Comprehension Challenge

Based on the article above, try to answer the following question:

Q: CDを返したい人は、どうしなければなりませんか。
(What must a person who wants to return a CD do?)

  1. 月曜日に返却ボックスに入れる。
  2. 火曜日に図書館の窓口に持っていく。
  3. 月曜日に図書館の窓口に持っていく。

Interactive Answer Analysis

  • Option 1 is incorrect. The text states: CDやDVDは...ボックスに入れないでください (Please do not put CDs or DVDs in the box).
  • Option 3 is incorrect. The library is closed (休み) on Monday.
  • Option 2 is CORRECT. The text states that the library is closed Monday, and CDs must be returned directly to the counter (直接窓口に) on the next open day, which is Tuesday (火曜日).

4. Key Takeaways for N4 Success

  1. Rule of the Exception: Questions almost always test you on the exception (introduced by ただし or しかし), not the general rule.
  2. Time & Date Tracking: Draw a quick timeline on your scrap paper if the text mentions multiple days (e.g., Monday vs. Tuesday).
  3. Identify the Target: Always clarify who is being addressed (e.g., all visitors, or only those returning CDs).
