N3 Grammar Master Review: Bridge the Gap to Fluency
Welcome to your N3 Grammar Master Review! Passing the JLPT N3 is a major milestone. It marks your transition from basic survival Japanese to functional, expressive fluency.
Today, we will dissect three high-yield grammar points that frequently appear on the exam and are essential for natural conversation. Let's master their structures, nuances, and hidden traps.
1. 〜うちに (Uchi ni) — *While / Before...*
This grammar point is used to express doing an action while a certain state persists, or before that state changes.
Grammar Structure
- Verb (Dictionary / ~ている / ~ない) + うちに
- Noun + のうちに
- い-Adjective + うちに
- な-Adjective + なうちに
The Nuance
There are two primary uses:
- While: Doing something while a temporary state exists (before it's too late).
- Before: Doing something before a change occurs (often paired with a negative verb).
Examples
- 日本にいるうちに、京都へ行きたいです。
- Nihon ni iru uchi ni, Kyōto e ikitai desu.
- While I am in Japan, I want to go to Kyoto. (Before I leave)
- スープが温かいうちに食べてください。
- Sūpu ga atakakai uchi ni tabete kudasai.
- Please eat the soup while it is still hot. (Before it gets cold)
- 暗くならないうちに、帰りましょう。
- Kuraku naranai uchi ni, kaerimashō.
- Let’s go home before it gets dark.
💡 Tutor’s Tip: Do not confuse 〜うちに with 〜間に (aida ni). While both mean "while," 〜うちに carries a sense of urgency—if you don't act now, the opportunity will pass!
2. 〜わけがない (Wake ga nai) — *There is no way that...*
This pattern is used to express a strong, logical denial. Based on facts or objective reasoning, you believe something is absolutely impossible.
Grammar Structure
- Verb / い-Adjective (Plain Form) + わけがない
- な-Adjective + な / である + わけがない
- Noun + の / である + わけがない
Examples
- あんなに優しい彼が、嘘をつくわけがない。
- Anna ni yasashii kare ga, uso o tsuku wake ga nai.
- There is no way that he, who is so kind, would lie.
- こんなに難しい問題、小学生に解けるわけがない。
- Konna ni muzukashii mondai, shōgakusei ni tokeru wake ga nai.
- There is no way an elementary school student can solve such a difficult problem.
💡 Tutor’s Tip: In casual speech, わけがない often shortens to 〜わけない (wake nai) or 〜はずがない (hazu ga nai). They are virtually interchangeable, but wake ga nai sounds slightly more argumentative.
3. 〜切る / 切れる (Kiru / Kireru) — *To do completely*
When attached to the stem of a verb, 〜切る (transitive) or 〜切れる (potential/intransitive) indicates that an action is finished thoroughly, or done to its absolute limit.
Grammar Structure
- Verb (ます-stem) + 切る / 切れる
Examples
- 彼はマラソンを最後まで走り切った。
- Kare wa marason o saigo made hashirikitta.
- He ran the marathon all the way to the end. (He finished completely)
- こんなにたくさんの料理は、一人では食べきれません。
- Konna ni takusan no ryōri wa, hitori de wa tabekiremasen.
- I cannot finish eating this much food by myself.
💡 Tutor’s Tip: This suffix also expresses strong conviction. For example, 言い切る (iikiru) means "to declare/assert confidently," and 信じ切る (shinjikiru) means "to believe in someone completely without a shred of doubt."
