Lesson Content

Learning Goal

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to recognize and use 20 N3-level vocabulary words related to nature, the environment, and human actions/interactions with them. You will understand their meanings, readings, and common usage in sentences.

Concept

N3 vocabulary moves beyond basic daily words and into more abstract and specific terms. These words often appear in news, articles, and discussions about the environment, society, and personal actions. Many of them are built from common kanji, so understanding the parts will help you remember the whole.

Step-by-Step Breakdown

We will group the vocabulary by theme or shared kanji to make learning easier.

Group 1: Helping & Effort (助, 努, 効, 勇)

These words are about taking action, especially positive or helpful actions.

  • 動詞 (どうし / dōshi) — verb (a part of speech)
    • Example: 「走る」は動詞です。("Hashiru" wa dōshi desu. / "Run" is a verb.)

Group 3: Intuition & Calculation (勘, 勝, 勢)

These words relate to internal feelings, judgment, and outcomes.

  • 勘 (かん / kan) — perception, intuition, sixth sense

Mini Examples

Here are some sentences that combine the new vocabulary.

  1. 勇気を持って、彼は川で溺れている人を助けた
Yūki o motte, kare wa kawa de oborete iru hito o tasuketa.
(With courage, he saved a person drowning in the river.)

  2. 環境問題に効果的な解決策を見つけるために努力する必要がある。
Kankyō mondai ni kōka teki na kaiketsusaku o mitsukeru tame ni doryoku suru hitsuyō ga aru.
(It is necessary to make an effort to find an effective solution to environmental problems.)

  3. 彼はが良く、相手の動きを読むのが上手だ。
Kare wa kan ga yoku, aite no ugoki o yomu no ga jōzu da.
(He has good intuition and is good at reading the opponent's movements.)

Common Mistake

Confusing 効く (kiku) and 利く (kiku)

Both are read as kiku, but they have different primary uses.

  • 効く is for effectiveness (medicine, methods, policies).
    • Correct: この薬はよく効く。(This medicine is effective.)
  • 利く is for ability/skill or something "working" (e.g., senses, machines).
    • Correct: 彼は目が利く。(He has sharp eyes / good judgment.)

Mistake: Using 利く for medicine. "この薬はよく利く" is technically understood but non-standard. Stick with 効く for effects and results.
