たり〜たりする — Listing Actions

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to list example actions (not a complete list) using the たり〜たりする pattern. You’ll sound more natural when talking about things you sometimes do or among other things do.

In Japanese, if you want to say “I do things like A and B” (but not only A and B), you use the たり〜たりする pattern.

• It means: “do things like … and …” or “among other things, do … and …”
• It implies the list is not exhaustive — there are other actions, but you’re just giving examples.

Think of it like saying in English:
“On weekends, I read books, watch movies, and stuff like that.”

1. How to form たり form from a verb

Rule: Take the た-form of the verb, then replace the final た (or だ) with たり (or だり).

• たべた → たべたり
• よんだ → よんだり

2. The full pattern

Verb₁ (たり-form) + Verb₂ (たり-form) + する

• The last verb is always する (in the tense you need).
• You can list two or more actions.

→ You cannot attach ます directly to たり. The last verb must be する (or its polite form します).本

❌ Wrong: Using たり for a complete list
→ If you mean “I did A, B, and C (and that’s everything),” use て-form instead.
