Reading Skimming Techniques

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to quickly identify the main idea and key details of an N3-level passage using skimming and scanning techniques, saving time and improving accuracy in the reading section.

Skimming and scanning are two fast-reading strategies. Skimming means reading quickly to get the general idea (the "gist") of a passage. Scanning means searching for specific information (like a date, name, or number) without reading every word. For the N3 reading test, you don't need to understand every kanji or grammar point—you need to find the answer efficiently.

Step 1: Skim the Title and First Sentence

• What to do: Read the title (if there is one) and the first sentence of each paragraph.
• Why: The main idea is often stated at the beginning.
• Example:
  Passage starts with: 最近、日本の若者の間で、読書の習慣が減っていると言われている。
  (Saikin, Nihon no wakamono no aida de, dokusho no shuukan ga hette iru to iwarete iru.)
  → Main idea: "Recently, it is said that reading habits among Japanese youth are decreasing."最近日本若者

Step 2: Look for Keywords and Repeated Words

• What to do: Scan for words that appear more than once or are in bold/italics.
• Why: These are usually the topic or key concept.
• Example: If you see 環境 (kankyō, environment) three times, the passage is about the environment.環境

Step 3: Scan for Specific Information (Numbers, Names, Dates)

• What to do: Move your eyes quickly over the text, looking only for numbers, proper nouns, or question-related words.
• Why: N3 questions often ask "When?", "Who?", "How many?"
• Example: Question: この実験はいつ行われましたか？ (When was this experiment conducted?)
  → Scan for dates like 2020年 (2020-nen) or 先月 (sengetsu, last month).実験行年先月

Step 4: Ignore Difficult Words (for now)

• What to do: If you see a kanji you don't know, skip it. Don't stop.
• Why: You can often guess the meaning from context, or it may not be needed for the answer.

Example 1: Skimming for the main idea

日本の夏はとても暑いです。特に、東京や大阪のような大都市では、気温が35度を超えることもあります。そのため、多くの人がエアコンを使いますが、電気代が高くなります。日本夏暑特東

• Skim: 暑い (atsui, hot), 大都市 (daitoshi, big city), 気温35度 (kion 35-do, temperature 35°C), エアコン (eakon, air conditioner), 電気代高い (denkidai takai, electricity bill expensive)暑大都市気温
• Main idea: Summer in Japan is very hot, especially in big cities, leading to high electricity costs.

Example 2: Scanning for a specific number

この図書館には、日本語の本が約5,000冊、英語の本が3,000冊あります。図書館日本語

• Question: 英語の本は何冊ありますか？ (How many English books are there?)英語本何冊
• Scan for number: 3,000冊 (sanzen-satsu, 3,000 books)冊

Reading every word from start to finish.
This wastes time. In N3, you have about 60 minutes for the reading section. If you read every single kanji and grammar point, you will run out of time.
Fix: Practice forcing yourself to skip unknown words. Trust that you can still answer the question.
