Lesson Content

Learning Goal

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to read two short Japanese texts and identify similarities and differences between them using basic comparison words and phrases.

Concept

When comparing two texts in Japanese, we often use words like ๅŒใ˜ (onaji - same) and ้•ใ† (chigau - different). We also use ใ€œใฏใ€œใŒใ€ใ€œใฏใ€œ structure to contrast two subjects. This skill helps you understand nuanced information, like comparing two restaurants, two people's schedules, or two product descriptions.

Step-by-Step Breakdown

1. Key Comparison Words

  • ๅŒใ˜ (onaji) - same
  • ้•ใ† (chigau) - different
  • ใ€œใ‚‚ใ€œ - also (used to show similarity)
  • ใ€œใฏใ€œใŒใ€ใ€œใฏใ€œ - "As for A..., but as for B..." (contrast)

2. Structure for Similarities

To say two things are the same:

  • Aใ‚‚Bใ‚‚ใ€œ (Both A and B...)
  • AใจBใฏๅŒใ˜ใงใ™ (A and B are the same)

3. Structure for Differences

To say two things are different:

  • Aใฏใ€œใŒใ€Bใฏใ€œ (A is..., but B is...)
  • AใจBใฏ้•ใ„ใพใ™ (A and B are different)

Mini Examples

This restaurant is cheap. And it's delicious.

Text B: ใ‚ใฎใƒฌใ‚นใƒˆใƒฉใƒณใฏ้ซ˜ใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚ใงใ‚‚ใ€ใŠใ„ใ—ใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚
(Ano resutoran wa takai desu. Demo, oishii desu.)
That restaurant is expensive. But it's delicious.

Comparison:

  • ๅŒใ˜ (Onaji - Same): ใฉใกใ‚‰ใ‚‚ใŠใ„ใ—ใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚(Dochira mo oishii desu.) Both are delicious.
  • ้•ใ† (Chigau - Different): ใ“ใฎใƒฌใ‚นใƒˆใƒฉใƒณใฏๅฎ‰ใ„ใงใ™ใŒใ€ใ‚ใฎใƒฌใ‚นใƒˆใƒฉใƒณใฏ้ซ˜ใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚(Kono resutoran wa yasui desu ga, ano resutoran wa takai desu.) This restaurant is cheap, but that restaurant is expensive.

Example 2: Two People's Hobbies

Text A: ็”ฐไธญใ•ใ‚“ใฏๆฏŽ้€ฑใƒ†ใƒ‹ใ‚นใ‚’ใ—ใพใ™ใ€‚ใใ—ใฆใ€ๆ–™็†ใ‚‚ใ—ใพใ™ใ€‚
(Tanaka-san wa maishuu tenisu o shimasu. Soshite, ryouri mo shimasu.)
Tanaka plays tennis every week. And he also cooks.

Text B: ้ˆดๆœจใ•ใ‚“ใฏๆฏŽ้€ฑใƒ†ใƒ‹ใ‚นใ‚’ใ—ใพใ™ใ€‚ใงใ‚‚ใ€ๆ–™็†ใฏใ—ใพใ›ใ‚“ใ€‚
(Suzuki-san wa maishuu tenisu o shimasu. Demo, ryouri wa shimasen.)
Suzuki plays tennis every week. But he doesn't cook.

Comparison:

  • ๅŒใ˜ (Onaji - Same): ไบŒไบบใจใ‚‚ๆฏŽ้€ฑใƒ†ใƒ‹ใ‚นใ‚’ใ—ใพใ™ใ€‚(Futari tomo maishuu tenisu o shimasu.) Both play tennis every week.
  • ้•ใ† (Chigau - Different): ็”ฐไธญใ•ใ‚“ใฏๆ–™็†ใ‚’ใ—ใพใ™ใŒใ€้ˆดๆœจใ•ใ‚“ใฏๆ–™็†ใ‚’ใ—ใพใ›ใ‚“ใ€‚(Tanaka-san wa ryouri o shimasu ga, Suzuki-san wa ryouri o shimasen.) Tanaka cooks, but Suzuki doesn't cook.

Example 3: Two Cities

Text A: ๆฑไบฌใฏไบบใŒๅคšใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚ใใ—ใฆใ€้›ป่ปŠใŒไพฟๅˆฉใงใ™ใ€‚
(Toukyou wa hito ga ooi desu. Soshite, densha ga benri desu.)
Tokyo has many people. And the trains are convenient.

Text B: ไบฌ้ƒฝใฏไบบใŒๅฐ‘ใชใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚ใงใ‚‚ใ€้›ป่ปŠใŒไพฟๅˆฉใงใ™ใ€‚
(Kyouto wa hito ga sukunai desu. Demo, densha ga benri desu.)
Kyoto has few people. But the trains are convenient.

Comparison:

  • ๅŒใ˜ (Onaji - Same): ใฉใกใ‚‰ใฎ้ƒฝๅธ‚ใ‚‚้›ป่ปŠใŒไพฟๅˆฉใงใ™ใ€‚(Dochira no toshi mo densha ga benri desu.) Both cities have convenient trains.
  • ้•ใ† (Chigau - Different): ๆฑไบฌใฏไบบใŒๅคšใ„ใงใ™ใŒใ€ไบฌ้ƒฝใฏไบบใŒๅฐ‘ใชใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚(Toukyou wa hito ga ooi desu ga, Kyouto wa hito ga sukunai desu.) Tokyo has many people, but Kyoto has few people.

Common Mistake

โŒ Using ใงใ‚‚ (demo) in the middle of a sentence

  • Wrong: ๆฑไบฌใฏไบบใŒๅคšใ„ใงใ‚‚ใ€ไบฌ้ƒฝใฏไบบใŒๅฐ‘ใชใ„ใ€‚
  • Right: ๆฑไบฌใฏไบบใŒๅคšใ„ใงใ™ใŒใ€ไบฌ้ƒฝใฏไบบใŒๅฐ‘ใชใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚

Tip: ใงใ‚‚ (demo) starts a new sentence. Use ใŒ (ga) to connect two contrasting clauses in one sentence.

Quick Practice

Read these two short texts and answer the questions:

Text A: ็งใฎ็”บใฏ้™ใ‹ใงใ™ใ€‚ใใ—ใฆใ€ๅ…ฌๅœ’ใŒใŸใใ•ใ‚“ใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ใ€‚
(Watashi no machi wa shizuka desu. Soshite, kouen ga takusan arimasu.)
My town is quiet. And there are many parks.

Text B: ๅ‹้”ใฎ็”บใฏใซใŽใ‚„ใ‹ใงใ™ใ€‚ใงใ‚‚ใ€ๅ…ฌๅœ’ใŒใŸใใ•ใ‚“ใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ใ€‚
(Tomodachi no machi wa nigiyaka desu. Demo, kouen ga takusan arimasu.)
My friend's town is lively. But there are many parks.

1. What is the same about both towns?
Answer: ใฉใกใ‚‰ใ‚‚____________ใŒใŸใใ•ใ‚“ใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ใ€‚
(Dochira mo ____________ ga takusan arimasu.)

2. What is different about the two towns?
Answer: ็งใฎ็”บใฏ____________ใงใ™ใŒใ€ๅ‹้”ใฎ็”บใฏ____________ใงใ™ใ€‚
(Watashi no machi wa ____________ desu ga, tomodachi no machi wa ____________ desu.)

(Answers: 1. ๅ…ฌๅœ’ / kouen, 2. ้™ใ‹ / shizuka, ใซใŽใ‚„ใ‹ / nigiyaka)

Summary and Next Step

You learned how to:

  • Use ๅŒใ˜ (onaji) and ้•ใ† (chigau) to state similarities and differences
  • Use Aใฏใ€œใŒใ€Bใฏใ€œ to contrast two subjects
  • Use ใฉใกใ‚‰ใ‚‚ใ€œ to say "both are..."
