Learning Goal
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to recognize and read 6 common N4 kanji that appear as verb roots. You'll understand how these kanji connect to verb meanings and be able to use them in simple sentences.
Concept
Many Japanese verbs are built from a kanji "root" (the core meaning) plus a hiragana ending (okurigana). Learning these root kanji helps you guess the meaning of unfamiliar verbs and remember vocabulary more easily. For example, the kanji 食 (た/ta) means "eat" and appears in 食べる (たべる, taberu – to eat).
Step-by-Step Breakdown
1. 食 (た/ta) – "eat, food"
- On'yomi (Chinese reading): ショク (shoku)
- Kun'yomi (Japanese reading): た (ta), く (ku)
- Common verb: 食べる (たべる, taberu) – to eat
- Memory tip: The top part looks like a roof over a table with food (the bottom radical 良).
- Writing note: 9 strokes. The top radical is 人 (person) over 良 (good).
2. 飲 (の/no) – "drink"
- On'yomi: イン (in)
- Kun'yomi: の (no)
- Common verb: 飲む (のむ, nomu) – to drink
- Memory tip: The left radical 食 (food) + right radical 欠 (lack) – when you lack food, you drink.

3. 見 (み/mi) – "see, look"
- On'yomi: ケン (ken)
- Kun'yomi: み (mi)
- Common verb: 見る (みる, miru) – to see, to watch
- Memory tip: The character looks like an eye (目) with legs – something that sees and moves.
- Writing note: 7 strokes. The top is 目 (me, eye) with legs below.
4. 聞 (き/ki) – "hear, ask"
- On'yomi: ブン (bun), モン (mon)
- Kun'yomi: き (ki)
- Common verb: 聞く (きく, kiku) – to hear, to listen, to ask

6. 読 (よ/yo) – "read"
- On'yomi: ドク (doku), トク (toku)
- Kun'yomi: よ (yo)
- Common verb: 読む (よむ, yomu) – to read
